Evolution

Recently, a team of Australian and Indonesian scientists discovered the remains of 'hobbits'in the Indonesian island of Flores. They found the developed skeleton of an adult humanoid standing at a height of 1 metre in a cave in the South Pacific island and the discovery has been touted as the most significant so far toward the study of human evolution.

Hell, Frodo was a ngentot.

The scientific name for this new species is homo floresiensis, and they evolved from a branch of humanity some bright ass scientist called homo erectus, along with modern-day gay relatives and American Presidents.

However, these findings show that these hobbits have devolved. They are a lot shorter than homo erectus and have brains the size of a grapefruit. That really shocked me, and knocked into me how far we've evolved. Now, 'grapefruit' is used to refer to undesirably-sized body parts; mainly boobs - not brains. We may say someone is pea-brained, but we all know that person really has a normal-sized brain. Only it's made of air.

Back to homo floresiensis - these evolutionary cousins of ours have devolved due to what biologists term the 'Island Rule'. This rule states that when mammals are isolated on small islands in the absence of predators, they become smaller as they do not need to fend for themselves, and they would take up less of the island's limited resources. Another group evolved to become smaller and more primitive cerebrally, yet they continue to take up more limited resources than their evolutionary predecessors. They're called Premiership Footballers. This evolutionary group spent a lot of time in mud and this continued their de-evolution to a stage called 'Mats'.

The rest of us are called 'modern humans', in the words of a layman; or homo sapiens, in scientific terms. Some homo sapiens listened to what is called 'classical music' and evolved to homo sexuals.

But the rest of us homo sapiens, unperturbed for 300,000 years by the pressures of devolving, we are who I am fearing for. I fear the pressures of modern life may cause us to devolve - mentally, if not physically like homo floresiensis. We have a lot of potential to evolve to a more advanced stage. What with modern education, literature, the development of the arts, philosophy; we have the works of Socrates, Plato, Aldous Huxley... Now we have JK Rowling, Dan Brown, Jenna Jameson to bring us to greater aesthetic (and phallic ;) heights.

But modern life brought with it the dangerous influences of drugs, alcohol, industrial waste and Britney Spears. There is in-fighting among humans. So much has threatened to tear the seams that bind humanity apart. Bush vs Kerry, America vs Terrorism, X-Men vs Street Fighter: these are all examples of concepts gone down the drain. Evolution thought us to create civilisations; to be united. The signs of devolving are out there already - racism, Bush getting reelected, Duran Duran returning.

It's scary, but we're humans and we will prevail.
